Viewing the Registry 4 Months ago Karma: 0
Hello everyone, I'm a newby here so please be patient with me !
I have the i-Mate Ultimate 9502 and I'm trying to get the GPS receiver up and running.
I have read in the Pocket PC Tips about setting up the GPS and it mentions editing the registry.
Can someone tell me, in very basic terms, how do I access the Registry on my PPC?
If this topic has been covered elsewhere, I apologise for the repeat.
Thank you.
Peter

Dear Peter,

Welcome here. Your Pocket PC is pretty new and may already have the GPS icon. If it doesn;t, it can be enabled by following this guide. You might have seen the guide already, and to your question of editing the Registry, I would recommend this free tool.

Regards,
Carty..

Thanks for your reply, Carty.

I tried to install PHM Registry Editor, but my phone wouldn't even look at it - not compatible...

So it seems I need to get hold of some sort of Registry editor to make any changes?
If this is correct then I'll start looking around for a suitable version and install it on the phone.

I do have an icon in this phone that is called 'External GPS' - clicking on this gives me the option of selecting different Com ports for the GPS device - however all the paperwork about this phone tells me there is a GPS receiver built in, along with the mechansim to collect data from a nearby cell tower; I guess this is what they call, integrated GPS.

Cheers, Peter

Yes, your device has a built-in GPS receiver. In the External GPS icon, choose Com4 which is most common. You don't need to make any changes there.

Now you need a mapping software to make use of the GPS. As a beginner, try Google Maps. Download Google Maps for Pocket PC and install it.

PHM Registry editor should definitely be compatible. Is your Pocket PC on Windows Mobile 6? In the download page of PHM, choose the second option that says Pocket PC 2003 ARM/PXA. That should definitely be compatible on WM6 too!

Regards,
Carty..

Hi Carty, Thanks for your reply. I have downloaded Google Maps and using Com4, the response is that no GPS Receiver was found. However, within Google Maps, there is an options selection that does the same as that provided on the phone. ie, I can provide settings directly into Google Maps.
The interesting thing is that changes made with the phone's 'External GPS' settings are not recorded into Google Maps. So I'm trying to set the correct settings into Google Maps directly - but so far, have had no success.

Yes, this phone uses Windows Mobile 6 Professional. I went back to the PHM site, tried the second option and all went well. The Registry Editor program installed Ok and works well.

Thanks for all your help Carty - I'd certainly be still floundering around without it!
Regards,
Peter

In Google Maps, under GPS Settings, you should see an option to set automatically by Windows from Start > Settings. Choose it and the in Start > Setting > External GPS icon, choose COM4 and baud rate ~4600. Soft-reset and try Google Maps. Make sure you tick on Use GPS option in Google Maps. If it says no GPS available, then change COM ports in Start > Settings menu again and see. Repeat for all COM ports and finally one should work.

Regards,
Carty..
