Cingular 8525 vs. Blackjack 3 Years, 3 Months ago Karma: 0
Hello,
I am looking at the 8525 or the Blackjack and had a few questions.
1. Is there anything the blackjack can do that the 8525 can't?
2. I am concerned about dialing on the 8525, do you have to use the stylus?
Does it work well with your finger?
Is there an setting or an easy way to make the numbers on the screen bigger? (I tried it in the store and kept "fat fingering" more then 1 diget.)
3. Can you initiate a hands free call from a bluetooth earpiece?
4. Does it come with a case?
5. Is anyone using the 8525 or the blackjack as a "wireless network card" tethered to their laptop?
If so, does it work? Work well?
Does it need any additional wire or is the included usb cord all you need?
6.If you are with Cingular, what data plan are you on? I'm trying to figure out what plan allows for the use off all features unlimited: Data, Tethered Data, Cingular Video, Text/IM messeging, the works!
7.Any other info you think would be important towards deciding between the two?

Thanks,
David

Dear David,

My immediate answer would be 8525!

Samsung' Blackjack is a smartphone and 8525 is a HTC Hermes with Pocket PC OS, obviously superior. Smartphones lack touchscreen and there are not many softwares for it like Pocket PC. Blackjack is under complaint for bad battery life too. Poor for Samsung.

Price wise, Blackjack with 2yr subscription in Cingular comes for $199 USD and 8525 could run around $499 USD but its worth it!

You can ofcourse dial wirelessly with bluetooth headsets on all Pocket PC devices, provided you have saved the contact under Voice command.

You can use a Pocket PC as wireless modem for your laptop but I'm not sure about smartphones on this. I'm also not sure about Cingular' data plan as I'm not in US

So finally, if i were to choose from the both, il definitely take 8525 though it runs for a little higher price.

I agree with Nick I do not see the point in a smartpone to me it is just a fancy cell phone. The PPC is so much more functional and has over 30,000 software titles availible.

8525 Yes, please don't fall for the commercials I have a few friends at Cingular who constantly remind me not to be involved in the Headache known as the Blackjack! If you are just looking for the sleek looking phone Blackjack is Ok, but trust me 8525 is well worth it.
I second the the above opinions on the 8525, if the cost is a big factor, I think you can still pickup the 8125 for $200 - $250 at cingular.
Main differences between 8125 and 8525 as I see them:
200 mhz vs the 8525's 400mhz processor (vs 220mhz for the Blackjack, although I don't know if a direct comparison is possible)
no G3 high speed data - 8125 has Edge for data connection.

With some tweaking ( see www.xda-developers.com ), I was very happy with my 8125, which was the main reason I upgraded to the 8525...very happy with the 8525, with minimal tweaking!

David
