Tired of looking at the same and plain old Start bar? Now here’s a small guide to make it more colorful or the way you want it to be.

Before we begin, let us enlighten you that the level of this guide is somewhat for advanced users for the fact that these images are not just from plain files but embedded into .dll files and the only way to change these icons are to replace them in the dll itself.

Warning: dll files are core files required for normal operation of windows mobile or any operating system software per se. Corrupted files may result in malfunction of respective software the device itself. Take your own risks, however it’s not all that complicated when you have backups of whatever file you change.
And remember, every time you change or replace the dll file, the effects may take place only after a soft-reset.

Start Icon:
It is held in the file shellres.192.dll.0409.mui or shellres.192.dll depending on the device you use, under the Windows folder.

Create your desired icon in size 41x36 for VGA and 21x48 for qVGA and save as .ico file (32bits).

Now copy the above mentioned file (shellres.192) from Windows folder of your Pocketpc to Desktop.

Remember to have a backup of this file and Unsign it using the Unsigner tool (included in this download).

Now open it with ResHacker (included in the above download) and go to Icon group/4609 and replace the icon with your created image.

Save the file and then sign it with Mssigner (also included in the above download).

Now you’ve got the dll file modified with your custom icon. Replace it back into Windows folder using Total Commanded or other better File Explorers.

Install  Icon Demarrer.cab (included in download) and soft-reset to see the new icon.

Note: You changed shellres.192.dll for VGA and for QVGA it should be 96 based on the dpi settings used. So change the appropriate files instead of searching for the wrong ones. More help shall be obtained below.
