HTC has made an impressive job with thier recently announced Touch Diamond Pocket PC and what now seems is that, it was just a prelude to the much bigger innovation the Touch HD pocket pc which has caught all the attention. Here we present you the detailed review of this hard core pocket pc.
When we set our eyes on the Touch Diamond Pocket PC, we thought wed spotted a clear winner on HTCs backyard. But the deeper we dig, the more were disappointed. The Touch diamond seems to be a pale shadow when compared to the all new HTC Touch HD, codenamed Blackstone. This ultra smart mobile device is a picture of perfection and would put even the much-hyped iPhone to shame. The usability is primary concern with any Windows Mobile core but HTC has taken care to amalgamate business and entertainment with the Touch FLO 3D technology in this flawless device. Though HTC has been inspired in many areas by the phenomenal iPhone, the small glitches, right from the design to the fluid user interface, have been considerably reduced.
Whats in the box
If youre looking for the smart and shiny package of the HTC Touch Diamond or the small and sleek exterior of the iPhone, then youre not getting it in the HTC Touch HD. There is no fancy package here but hey, youre sure to discard the box (which protects the precious Pocket PC in hard shipping conditions) after you take the device out. So, why bother?
Peep into the box and youd find a USB cable for data sync with Desktop connectivity, a universally designed charger with slot-in country-specific pin sections, head-set, warranty card, user manual, and quick start guide. If youre lucky, then youd end with a Sandisk SDHC card of 8GB memory as well!
There is also a soft bag included for protecting the HTC Touch HD and fortunately, it doesn't make the device much thicker.
The First Look and Feel!
The HTC Touch HD flaunts a pleasant design with rounded corners to fit cozily in your palm and stylish looks. The back panel has a soft-touch rubbery finish to provide a firmer grip and doesnt leave any ugly fingerprints. On the contrary, the front panel is entirely encased in the display glass which is highly (fingerprint) smudge-prone. HTC claims that the glass cover would protect the device from the inevitable scratches and we fervently hope so too, especially after our Touch Diamond got scratched in the very first week of use.
Weight and Dimensions
THE HTC Touch HD weights 146gms and measures 115mm x 62.8mm x 12mm which is slighly smaller than the iPhone and roughly 10gms heavier than the iPhone. Look at the images here for a side by side comparision with the HTC Touch Diamond, iPhone and the Touch HD.
The Screen
Though the device is smaller than the iPhone, HTC Touch HD has a massive 3.8" WVGA screen with a resolution of a whopping 480x800 pixels. That's pretty amazing and by far the largest in pocket pc or any other smart mobiles. It is even roughly twice higher than the iPhone' resolution. HTC has done an impressive work here to let us enjoy crispy, crystal clear pictures and videos.
Hardware Keys and Controls
The body sports only a handful of controls. The on/off key is on the top while the four touch sensitive keys (two receiver keys, Home key and back key) are lined up below the display. The absence of the D-pad is conspicuous which makes the device touch-operable only. While the iPhone could slink away with that ploy, were not really sure how Windows Mobile would do that, especially without a directional navigation hard key! The volume rocker is found on the left side of the device. Thats about the minimalistic controls on the HTC Touch HD.
Stylus
The stylus is neatly tucked in the lower right corner of the phone. Similarly to the Touch Diamond, the stylus is active with magnetic action enabling it to remain in place.
LED Indicators
While the HTC Touch Diamond had a nice white ring of light which even circles for missed call and other notifications, in HTC Touch HD the indicator lamp is hidden within the power button at the top. Maybe HTC has kept it this way so you can directly see the flashing indicator just by looking down to your shirt pocket if you have your device there but unfortunately the huge size may not fit well in your shirt pocket.
At The Top
Apart from the power button with the hidden indicator lights, there's nothing more to be described here.
