Internet sharing with pocket-pc

Thursday, 19 April 2007

Back to the older devices like WM2003se (well, they ain't very old yet!), you could see an item called Modem Link in your Programs menu, which lets you use the interenet from a GPRS/data connection on your Notebook/PC via USB or Bluetooth - classically called as DUN - Dial Up Networking. Though it was a head-ache to set it up for the first time with HTC USB Modem drivers to be installed on your PC, lately AKU3 has been released and this has been completely replaced by a better program called Internet Sharing and removed DUN over Bluetooth!  Read on to find the pros and cons..

They actually didn't completely remove the internet sharing via Bluetooth, have just removed it as being built-in by default and let the OEM choose whether to include or not in their retailing pocket-pc. Most OEMs have removed it in ther recent AKU3 updates and this has caused lot of irritated feedbacks to the developers and they certainly have plans to implement it back again.

Anyway, How is the new Internet Sharing Better?

An improved user-interface and no need of using connection strings such as *99#

Previous Modem Link' internet sharing connection gets interrupted when you receive a call while it doesn't in the new Internet sharing. However this is not on all operators and requires 3G support.

Modem Link' connection llows either Active Sync connection or the internet connection at a time. But now simultaneously your device will be Active-synced while you enjoy intrnet sharing.

Alright, this should be enough and also know that its not only with AKU3, WM6 also comes with the same. I learnt this from a blog post by Greg Scott, who is a developer on a team that provides core networking technologies on Windows Mobile.
