Your Pocket PC becoming slower?

Monday, 31 December 2007

Over time, like a Desktop PC running on Windows, did you notice that your Pocket PC on Windows Mobile is also running slower and not responsive as quick as it was before? Then read on to find out why or how you can overcome it.

The slowing of Pocket PC simply happens due to the junk that accumulates over time. But theres more than that.

Close and not minimize:
Unlike a Desktop PC, when you close an application in your Pocket PC, its really not closed but just minimized. Microsoft has made it this way because the application will load faster when you open it the subsequent times. But unfortunately when more and more applications are just minimized instead of closing, they occupy the entire RAM making the device slower. This can be overcomed by using TaskManager applications. Most task manager applications are free and HTC recently introduced an application called HTC X button which closes the applications instead of minimize. But we never recommend it because we noticed that HTC' application by itself is slowing down the device and so you better go for other free ones out there.

Keep your Device Memory clean:
In a Pocket PC, the RAM and Device Memory are together and shared among the Storage. When you use your device memory or the built-in Pocket PC' memory, it leaves out very little space for the RAM. Obviously this will slow down your device. So try not to use your Device Memory by following some tips below
-Use SD card as your default Storage for Camera Pictures
-Remove all templates and other junk files from My Documents if you don't use them
-Usually you may copy .cab files to Device Memory and after installation you may forget to delete them. Don't!
-Keep your current Ringtone alone in the device memory and the rest on Storage Card.
-Store Email attachments on Storage Card (Option selected through settings)
-Move Temp and Cache folders of Internet to Storage cards.
-Install only the necessary applications on Main Memory and the rest on Storage card. Read about where to install softwares on a Pocket PC.

The best ever solution:
You might be aware of programs like SPB Backup which brings back your Pocket PC to the same condition as it was when backing up. So make a hard-reset to your device, make all settings, install all necessary softwares and finally when you think your device is clean, take a backup. Later when you think the device is getting slower, just make a hard-reset and restore the backup. Voila, you should expect the same speed of the device as you found it before!
