PocketPC Review: Eten Glofiish X500+

Wednesday, 19 September 2007
A completely different device from the HTC' lot, still a Pocket PC, Windows Mobile 6 Profession device, Glofiish is manufactured by Eten Corporation. Read on to find out what's exclusive from Eten.. First look:
The black, matt finished casing makes it really nice to hold in hands. The device is a little long but the reduced thickness makes it in right proportions with the sleek edges.

In a single line: It looks great!

Hardware:
Screen: A VGA resolution in a qVGA form factor, gives the screen an outstanding display clearity. Its looks rich! welL, the camera is still, or just 2 megapixels and the picture it captures is just basic. There in LED flash just in case if you needed.

Buttons: Just the two soft keys but no dedicated buttons for Start and Ok might be an handicap but there are two additional hardware keys above the screen and assigned to GPS and Today Screen by default, which apparently can be changed.

GPS: Yes you read that right in the previous paragraph. This PocketPC sports a built in SirfStar III GPS device! This is like something that makes this PocketPC complete or loaded, anyway you would like to address it to date.

Battery: We've got continuous 4.5hrs talk-time and that makes it a normal but not bad battery. There are Pocket PC devices which get tired on 3.5hrs itself. So its good with Eten here.

Additionals: You don't get a MicroSD card and instead they supplied a free car mount kit. Its just a PocketPC holder with charger on standard cigarette lighter plug. No bluetooth or other hypes and so its just a normal thing you can say. The holder however has a suction cup at the end to remove and stick it easily anywhere you would like. Pretty handy when you use the GPS navigator.

Horse-Power:
A Samsung SC32442 processor with a speed of 400Mhz is nothing to boast of but the applications run a lot snappier than OMAP processors on around 200Mhz which are frequent in most HTC devices.

Softwares:
Eten seems to give updates to their ROMs quite regularly and their official ROMs are really great to use your Pocket PC straight out of the box. Additional applications they provide through Extended ROM auto-install includes Call blocker, Birthday reminder, Cyberon Voice command, basic Image editing and manipulating tools and something called as QuickLink which gives shortcut icons on Today screen. Something like iLauncher or SPB' Pocket Plus.

Since all these apps get installed to phone memory and we may use a better third-party applications which do the same or a bit more advanced features, we shall skip the Extended ROM installation by a secret method (not by a soft-reset at the installation prompt like in HTC devices, if you would like to know how, get into our forums).

We still have Office 2007 and that is how I'm writing this neat review now. Yeah, its a pleasure for me writing in Pocket PC. Can do it just on the go, whenever, wherever I'm.

Cons:
Yeah, finally we're here, to let you know the only drawback we faced. Not sure if there's anything wrong with their Audio hardware or the drivers, but the music or anything that's out of the speaker, both the phone' and the loudspeaker, the volume is very very low! Very difficult to speak, or I mean - hear the conversation, when your in a little noisy environment too! And in this condition, don't even think about using the PocketPC as a music player. The sound from head-set is also ver low indeed!
