The year 2010 has started and some new problems to Windows Mobile Pocket PC users has appeared. Possibly called the Y2K16 bug where SMS messages received are dated to 2016 instead of 10. Here’s how you can fix it temporarily.

This issue is not faced by all Pocket PC users worldwide but to a major portion of them on certain carriers especially Sprint, Verizon and many more. And sarcastically, this issue is not just for Windows Mobile Pocket PC phones but also in some credit card processing terminals like in the Australia where many retail stores could not charge their customer’s credit cards as the transaction seems to be getting processed with the date of 2016 where many credit cards have already expired.

Many non Windows Mobile phones also experience this issue so it might not be just a problem with Windows Mobile but something linked to the way the date is stored and transmitted between carriers and phones. Someone explained a theory stating that if they were using hexa decimal values to pass the date, then 10 gets renumbered to 16 however there is no proof yet and the issue is been looked upon.

Right now, here’s the work around. Make the following Registry changes with a free Pocket PC Registry editor and soft-reset.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\SMS]
"RecvTimeStamp"=dword:00000001

Alternatively, if you don’t like fiddling with the registry yourself, you can install this patch file that does these changes for you.

What this actually does is to tell your Windows Mobile Pocket PC phone to use the device time for received messages and not the timestamp sent by the carrier. Hope the carriers or manufacturers provide a proper solution as quick as possible or at least before real 2016 comes up where we may have many more problems.
