If you use Google Maps™ more often either for navigation solely or just for fun and would like to cut down on your network' data costs, try Terracrosser. It caches the map while you move across and saves them for future navigation. Definitely not a good work-around for all but may come as handy for many.

Update: Terracrosser is even better by caching Maps on a Desktop PC.
