Friday, 28 March 2008

htc shift pocket pc HTC Shift is a recently introduced UMPC on the market that runs both Windows Vista and Windows Mobile together. Pulser, a member of xda-dev has writen a small FAQ list for this device. If you're inetersted, read more to check it out.

FEATURES:
Q: Can I install a full windows mobile instead of snapvue ?
A: Most of it is already there, it just needs to be unlocked, see this thread for unlocking.

Q: Can Shift make a phone call ?
A: No shift can't make a phone call out of the box, but there is a good chance that it will be able to using custom ROM's (you will need to hack your SHIFT to do it)
It is possible to use voice software client in vista to do it (Skype, VoIP client etc.)

RESTORE/RECOVER:
Q: How do I recover Vista, from the recovery partition ?
A: When booting vista press F3 (fn + 3) and follow instructions on screen. (ALL DATA WILL BE LOST)

Q: How do I hard reset the WM part if it gets corrupted ?
A: If you can still run apps. in WM run the clearstorage.exe, otherwise take a look of this thread (ALL DATA WILL BE LOST)

HARDWARE:
Q: Can I upgrade the shift to 2GB RAM ?
A: We haven't found a microdimm with the correct connector yet (if you know any please provide info) more info here

Q: Can I upgrade the shift's hard drive ?
A: We haven't found a hard drive with the correct connector yet (it's a 1,8" GAL drive) (if you know any please provide info)

Q: Can I use Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SD card within snapvue or windows mobile ?
A: For the time being you can't access that hardware from the WM side, but again there is a good possibility, that a custom ROM will remove those limitations.

Q: Does the Shift have a GPS module ?
A: Yes the shift have a build in GPS chip, but since we don't have any drivers for it yet, we are not sure if antenna etc. are there. (on the prototype units it was working so there is a good chance it will work on production models to)
NOTE: After i opened up my shift i can confirm the GPS antenna is there !!

Q: Does the shift support the SDHC Memory Cards
A: Yes they are supported. (1 user had problems using Sandisk 8GB) I'm using a memory2go 16GB SDHC, and alot of users didn't have any problems.

Q: My USB CD drive doesn't work, what is wrong ?
A: The shift USB port doesn't have that much juice in it, so connect external power to the usbhub, using miniusb plug or put external power on the drive. more info here

Q: What is the native resolution on the display ?
A: Then native resolution is 800 x 480, but there is a quick button to "instant" switch to 1024 x 600, and it works quiet well.

SOFTWARE:
Q: Can I install windows XP on my Shift ?
A: you can, but allot of things won't work since HTC are unwilling to release drivers (they won't even release them for Vista)

Q: Can I remove the hidden Vista recovery partition to get more space on my drive ?
A: No we don't even know if it's a partition or a flash media, but it can't be seen by ghost or partition software.

Q: Can I access WM from the Vista side ?
A: using the usbtool found in this thread
you are able to connect the WM side to Vista as it was a normal phone.

Q: Will Vista SP1 run on my shift ?
A: Yes, and your shift will perform better (some people have had some issues with the new Intel vga driver from windows update though)
and the "USBtool" disconnecting all the time.

Q: what is Origami, and is it any good ?
you can read about it here , and I think this quote from another thread says it well:
I played with Origami for 5 min, then disabled it. Haven't run it since. It seemed slow and clunky, and does nothing that Vista can't do better.
PS: The browser is pretty cool with it's touch functions.

Q: Can I rotate the screen in windows vista ?
A: No solution has been found yet !

Snapvue/WM:
Q: How do I get rid of the black areas in the sides after I have unlocked WM ?
A: You can't at the moment, the resolution is not supported by WM (again hopefully custom ROM's will do the trick)

Q: How do I turn WM/Snapvue off, so I don't loose any power when traveling etc. ?
A: The only way to turn WM/Snapvue off is to remove the battery for a short period of time and don't touch the power switch after, hopefully a way will be found soon.

MISCELLANEOUS:
Q: What can I do to speed up the process of making custom ROM's ?
A: You can donate to the shift project here, and help to test features/programs posted in the forum.

htc shiftHTC Shift is the first device to run both Windows Vista and Windows Mobile together! Starting March 24th 2008, HTC Shift will be available from Sprint with CDMA Evdo connectivity. The price tag or 1500 USD might be worth it if you were looking for a much portable laptop. And there's already as hack to release the full potential of Windows Mobile overcoming HTC' limitations.

Full Windows Mobile on HTC Shift

htc shiftDue to licensing issues, HTC stripped most parts of Windows Mobile from their HTC Shift which was announced to have both Vista and Windows Mobile together. The device is not yet widely available in the market but the hackers have already found out a way to unlock the full potential of the device through e-mail attachments and now you can enjoy full Windows Mobile functions on a Shift whenever you get bored of Vista performing slow or due to gruesomely sucking batter life. HTC Advantage - Updated

I think it's time for a little criticism. HTC instead of boasting of with their Shift UMPC which they're doing since GITEX 2007, now wants to show-off with an upgraded HTC Advantage even after SE introducing XPERIA. First to begin with, they introduced the device in the name HTC Athena and then made it the Advantage or X7501 The device was looking like a huge diary and not very handy to be caried around. Now they add TouchFlo to it, imagine holding the device with one hand and swiping across the screen with the other. Ridiculous ain't it? You gotta read more for pics and details..

"Hybrid" HTC Shift to be launched at GITEX!

Hybrid-htc-shiftDown the ages, there’s been a shift from the usual desktop to laptop and now to non connected PDA and cell phones to finally the Pocket PC’s which converge all these into a single device! There have been many experiments to create different forms of these devices, but the most preferred options are the laptops for web browsing, business applications etc and the connected mobile device for PDA and multimedia uses. These two forms have different capacities and limitations!
HTC, the pioneers in the mobile arena, has now ventured to combine the two platforms and has come out with the HTC Shift! The “Hybrid” Shift is powered by 2 OS on 2 different processors. It will not only run Windows Vista Business but also the Intel Santa Rosa A110 processor with a memory of 1GB DDR2 RAM and a 40 GB hard drive. The device will utilize the 400 MHz processor from Qualcomm while operating Windows Mobile 6 Professional and has a memory of 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of ROM. The “Hybrid” Shift is all set to be launched in the GITEX at Dubai and is bound to cost $1500!

HTC Shift to support Windows Mobile and Vista!

The HTC Shift is the very first UMPC device which is powered by the Windows Vista along with Windows Mobile simultaneously! HTC prefers to call this as “Snap VUE” which enables the user to operate a mix of Windows Mobile 6 Classics and Professional version independently apart from Windows Vista. This adds Windows Mobile viewer options to Windows Vista where there is instant access to PIM and e-mail accounts even when the pocket PC is actually in the switch off mode. The HTC Shift can be powered by Windows Mobile mode for more than 5 days and can be accessed by the Windows start key! But while using the Windows Vista, the battery time is only for 3 hours! But sources have it that the HTC Shift is bound to be the most interesting device of this year! So, HTC users will be waiting to get their hands on this beauty!
