The old controversy on lack of proper video drivers for HTC TyTn II extends to their latest pocket pc devices as well. We're talking about the much hyped Touch Diamond and Touch Pro.

Qualcomm chipsets are mere junk or proper video drivers are lacking, the mystery remains unclear. If you intend to use your Pocket PC more like a media player and other graphic intense works, we suggest you choose better devices. Video player CorePlay has a nice benchmark utility built in and has spit out these results:

Omnia - Raw framebuffer: 442.74%Universal - Direct Draw: 165.28%
Universal - Direct Draw: 165.28%
Touch Pro - QTv display: 152.44%

It can be clearly noted that Samsung Omnia performs many times faster than the Touch Pro when it comes to video or graphics. Even the three year old HTC Universal which has a lower speed processor seems to perform better than the latest one.

These issues are not just for video playbacks, proper graphic driver plays a major part in every application. For example, browsing the internet with Opera, the video posted here clearly shows how badly the rendering is in landscape modes.

If you have a look at this video you'll notice t's a shame that a Nokia mobile with far slower processor (TI OMAP @ 330 Mhz) outperforms the over 500 Mhz ones made by HTC. Universal is still made by HTC but the 262Mhz OMAP performs better than 528Mhz from Qualcomm! Any comments?

Bruno Mateus (83.240.182.xxx) 2009-03-25 20:31:21 Actually, this is not correct, because you're benchmarking through a software that doesn't use any hardware acceleration on a HTC Diamond (I don't know about the other pdas, but Core doesn't use the accelerated video hardware available). If you use Windows Media Player in a HTC Diamond pda, you will actually notice quite an improvement, if the video file is correctly encoded for it (not all .mp4 encodings are the same). There's a free convertion tool that the people from xda-developers built to make great quality video files to view on an HTC. By better we mean, quite better than the default poor quality which windows media player of your Pocket PC offers. The poor quality is because of the poor codecs. Even WM6 Pocket PC devices dont have proper codecs and people move on to CorePlayer or TCPMP for slight better playback. Just in case if you don't use them yet and would like to stick on to the old-school windows media player, download these codecs to improve playback performance a little at-least.
